When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel, and Bill Lawrence were asked how they got Harrison Ford to star in the show, Segel said that Goldstein originally wanted a "Harrison Ford type" and wanted to audition people similar to Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they would have to at least pitch it to Ford first, as he thought he would turn it down outright, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford had been offered the project, which would spark interest from other big-name actors. In the end, Goldstein talked to Ford and sold him the role. Goldstein still doesn't understand what he did to convince him, but was thrilled nonetheless. He has the weird, idiotically confident energy needed for the role. And Jessica is perfect. Her humor fits the dialogue just right. This is the new breed of situation dramedies. No real punchlines, just engaging personalities with a dash of quirkiness and family circumstances that are a little above the norm but still relatable. Of course, Jimmy's behavior as a therapist is completely absurd. You'd lose your license in an instant. Just impossible. But we allow metaphorical situations in the drama. And in this script, we sense a strong sense of purpose in the choices. We have to give the writers the edge and try to get to the heart of the matter. For me, it's easy and fun. Other reviewers seemed to have struggled.
